Matthew came into this world ready to be a scout. From the time he was a little, he was already courteous, kind, loyal, helpful, and obedient. He is the oldest of 4 children, and was never the stereotypical older brother, never teased, or tortured his younger siblings, but loved to take care of them and make them laugh. To be honest, there isn’t much we or the scouting program could teach him about citizenship and leadership that he couldn’t have figured out on his own. What scouting has done was provide opportunity for Matthew to prove himself, over and over again. There have been bumps and roadblocks and frustrations along the way, but the eagle rank was his ultimate goal, and we have had the privilege to watch and help as has learned, adapted, and endured.
Matthew has loved a variety of activities growing up such as soccer, piano, saxophone, airsoft, movie making and biking. Currently, he is a member of the national honor society, treasurer of stem club, and works as a tutor at Kumon. He has excelled in music as a choir section leader, choir council treasurer, honor choir member, and lead in the school musical. Our garage has become his workshop for a variety of his engineering ideas and he hopes to work as an engineer in the future. Matthew also has a great appreciation for this nation we live in. When he was in 5th grade, he planned out a cross country road trip which overwhelmed us at the thought of driving so far. We told him we could consider going when he could help us drive. This summer he got his license and off we drove to 7 church history sites, 6 National parks and monuments, well over 5 thousand miles, through 4 thunderstorms, 3 time zones, 2 tornado warnings, and replacing 1 dead car battery. He has inspired our family to try more and to do more! We are immensely proud of all that he is, and of his love for his country which scouting has helped to inspire.
